Lung Diseases

There are many medical conditions that can affect the respiratory system and how we breathe - from the common cold, all the way to lung cancer. Some are caused by microorganisms including common viral infections such as the flu or respiratory syncytial virus, which is known as RSV. Others are the result of chronic conditions such as asthma, allergies and cystic fibrosis.

According to the National Library of Medicine, Lung Disease is any problem in the lungs that prevents the lungs from working properly. According to NLM, there are three types of lung diseases: airway diseases like asthma and emphysema that block or restrict the passage of oxygen through airways, lung tissue diseases like pulmonary fibrosis that damage the lung itself and make it difficult for the lung to expand fully, and lung circulation diseases like pulmonary hypertension that affect blood vessels in the lungs. By following the links below you can learn more about many of these conditions.
