At Any Moment - Mr. Terry Archard

In March 2014, Mr. Terry Archard of Middle Granville was grocery shopping in the Granville Price Chopper when his heart suddenly stopped beating. Mr. Harry Ralph of Danby, VT, who was trained in CPR and the use of automatic external defibrillators in his job with Green Mountain Power, rushed to Mr. Archard’s aid and used CPR and an AED to restart his heart while an ambulance was en route. EMTs from Granville Emergency Squad further stabilized Mr. Archard and rushed him to the Glens Falls Hospital Emergency Department where doctors used therapeutic hypothermia to lower his body temperature, preventing brain damage while his blood flow was impaired. A diagnostic cardiac catheterization was then performed in the Hospital’s cardiovascular suite, at which time severe blockages were discovered in Mr. Archard’s coronary arteries and he was rushed to Albany Medical Center for open heart surgery. Today, Mr. Archard is doing well and, with Mr. Ralph as his inspiration, has become CPR-certified himself.
