Hospital Sleep Disorders Center in Glens Falls Receives Program Accreditation
The Glens Falls Hospital Sleep Disorder Center recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
The Sleep Disorder Center, which opened in November of 1998, can perform both in-lab and in-home sleep apnea testing on patients 18 years and older as well as a full range of sleep disorder diagnoses. Staffed by nationally credentialed Respiratory Therapists and Sleep Technologists, the Center tests patients that have initial diagnosis such as: excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring, witnessed apnea, uncontrolled hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and uncontrollable sleep attacks.
Originally named the Adirondack Sleep Disorders Lab, the Center first opened as a one-bed facility at the main Glens Falls Hospital campus located at 100 Park Street. Due to high demand for sleep disorder testing, the lab quickly outgrew the space and the Center was moved several times, growing with each location. In 2006, the program was transitioned to 92 Broad Street, Glens Falls, which had been specifically outfitted for the Sleep Lab, including six monitored beds with private bathrooms.
“It has been incredible to see the evolution of this facility from concept to our current state-of-the-art center,” said Dr. Surendra Nevatia MD, FCCP, FAASM, who created the Sleep Disorders Center. “We now offer patients in our community the very best in sleep disorder medicine and testing, without the travel or expense of leaving our area.”
Dr. Nevatia is board certified in internal, pulmonary and sleep medicine. He has been the Medical Director of Respiratory Care Services at Glens Falls Hospital since 1985 and Medical Director of the Sleep Center since it started in 1998. Dr. Nevatia provides consultations for all sleep-related disorders and pulmonary diseases at Adirondack Pulmonary Medicine, located at 92 Broad Street.

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care, and quality assurance. Additionally, the sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accredited a sleep disorders center for the first time in 1977. Today there are more than 2,500 AASM-accredited sleep centers across the country.
